Restoring a Water Conveyance Swale in Morrisville, NC

Our team recently completed the restoration of a water conveyance swale in Morrisville, NC. Water conveyance swales play a critical role in stormwater management. They are designed to move water efficiently from one location to another while providing natural treatment by allowing infiltration or temporary pooling. This process helps reduce nitrogen and phosphorus levels before the water reaches our natural waterways, ultimately protecting the health of our environment.

Over the past several years, this swale in Morrisville, had been neglected due to a lack of routine maintenance. Herbicide use in the area had left a ring of dead vegetation around the rocks, which in turn led to erosion near the upstream portion of the swale around the Flared End Section (FES). This erosion contributed to sediment buildup in the riprap dissipater, creating conditions for unwanted vegetation—such as cattails and woody plants—to take root in the flow line.

To address these issues, our construction crew removed all organic and woody vegetation from the swale and re-graded it to restore proper flow. We then installed non-woven geotextile fabric and armored it with Class B rock, ensuring long-term stability and performance.
